Mannitol vs Filler-Free Peptides
Published · 2 min read
A formulation label describes part of a material’s composition. It does not independently establish identity, purity, measured peptide content or suitability for any use.
What the formulation label means
Mannitol can serve different roles depending on the formulation. FDA materials describe its use as both an active ingredient and an excipient in different products. The FDA review (opens in a new tab) illustrates why the role must be read in context.
An inactive-ingredient listing is information about approved products in a particular context; it is not approval of every mixture containing that ingredient. See the FDA Inactive Ingredient Database FAQs (opens in a new tab).
Gross mass is not target peptide content
A dry solid may include counterions and residual moisture even when a bulking excipient is absent. Bachem’s quality-control guide (opens in a new tab) explains why peptide content must be considered separately from purity.
| Record | Question |
|---|---|
| Composition statement | Which components are declared? |
| Content result | How much was measured, and on what basis? |
| Identity result | What evidence supports the assigned material? |
Why appearance is insufficient
Do not use the size, shape or apparent density of a dried cake as a substitute for quantitative analysis. A photograph cannot establish the amount of a specific compound in a container. In a comparison record, keep appearance under observations and analytical results under measurements.
Make the comparison reproducible
Match the exact formulation and sample identifier before comparing two documents. Record declared excipients, units, the analytical method and any unmeasured components. If one field is absent, label it unknown rather than filling it from an assumption about the product name.
These distinctions support careful reading of documentation. They do not rank formulations for personal use or provide a preparation method.
